Our Classes Behaviour What we should be striving towards as actors is to create interesting characters that our audiences want to learn more about. How do we get away from the cliché? This class in character development looks at how we can do this using status and attitude as our tools to study human behaviour and recreate it. An incredible resource for the actor. * classes start every 6 to 8 weeks Behaviour II This class will provide the student the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve acquired in Behaviour I to scene and text work with a wee bit of camera work thrown in. Scene/Camera The page is a map. This class explores the breaking down of a scene so the actor understands every moment and how to play it. Keep things changing, don't let the audience know where you're going next. The class starts by dealing with scene techniques and then moves into how to apply your scene work and make it work for the camera. Discover how the camera can aid you in portraying what you want. * classes start every 6 to 8 weeks Laban Laban, which is a system created by dancer/ choreographer, Rudolph Laban, for dancers has been adopted by actors as a movement based training or method. It informs the actor in many ways. You become aware of your own subtle and obvious physicality in everyday life. It forces you to explore a new range of movement you may not be accustomed to or comfortable with. Recognise and understand where and how thought, emotion, and intention live in the body and how it is expressed simultaneously through text and character.
In this class we focused on individual process and application through monologues and scenes. Students were taken through intense physical and vocal work to discover how to embody text, intention, images and character.
Advanced Camera The audition is done, you're on the set. Now what? Hit your mark, find your light, and deal with the angles. This class is a further look at the technicalities the actor must know if they are to work in the world of film.
Cinemaniac
This is a new advanced on camera class. The class will involve watching scenes and performing on camera. The class will cover a brief history of film from 1895-2006. You will look at the important films and film makers through the eras and discuss the evolution of film. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to analyze films through structure, performance and editing. Students will also have the opportunity to perform scenes from famous films. The class will be treated as a film set where you will shoot scenes in single shots, medium shots, and close ups. Technical aspects of film will be explored through film blocking, hitting your mark, eye lines, while participating in lighting, sound etc. This is a hands on class. The Production Class Welcome to the theatre. You are cast in a play directed by a professional director culminating in a short run in front of an audience at either the studio, a professional theatre, or in a theatre festival. Even if you never imagined doing a live performance, you will feel the rush that only theatre will bring you while learning the process of what an actor needs to do to get there.
Inner Life A look at the psychology of a character. Investigate the creation of the physical expression of the character. Work on layers and levels in each character. This class is a fascinating look into character development
Space, Place, & Location
The objective for this class is to have students explore character and relationships as they exist in space, both physical and emotional.
Using the Status scale as a starting point, the students will explore the range of motion and movement each number lives in and. Just as when we’re driving a car, each person has a “zone” they are comfortable in, the distance between the car in front and behind them where they feel safe. All characters live in their own “zones”. This class is intended to help actors develop their intuition and responsibility for the space they inhabit.
Teacher also introduce elements of the directional scale and qualities of movement used in the Laban class. This will help students develop their “actor” language, and introduce the physical impulses used and the space they inhabit.
Playing Shakespeare It's exactly what it sounds like. Is Shakespeare difficult to play? Yes. But we look at all the hints the greatest writer in history has given us, we learn how to make it all make sense and we make the most beautiful writing come to life into some of the greatest characters and stories ever written. Improv There's no hidden secret to it. It is about openness and giving. Learn how becoming a good improv actor can make you a better overall actor. Film Audition Workshops What's the point if you can't get the job? This one day workshop looks at what you can do in that audition room that gives you a better chance. We start from the moment you walk in and cover everything through to the ever important last impression. A practical course on auditioning for film and television.
Advanced Behaviour Go further into our status and attitude work. This course examines the inner psychology and the resulting outer behaviour.
This class is for actors (people? students?) who are interested in playwriting- or writers who are interested in acting- particularly (but not necessarily limited to) those interested in the creation of a solo piece. Over the course of the eight weeks, students will write and workshop a ten minute play. Please note that although for the purposes of this class the time limit on the scripts will be ten minutes, this does not mean that the play itself can only be ten minutes long. If your script is longer, we will pick a ten minute section or scene to focus on during the class. Please note that due to the very nature of this course writing will be required! Deadlines will also be imposed and must be met (unless you are dead or have a very, very, very, very good reason).
Teen Production Class This course progresses over two semesters and culminates in a run at a professional theatre in Montreal. The first semester gives students the opportunity to work on acting techniques, characterization, status, movement, and focus. The second semester the students will apply these techniques they have learned as they work towards creating a production and confronting the challenges of developing, preparing, and performing a professional production in front of an audience.
Teen acting workshop Teen Actors will have the opportunity to work with professionals, in a professional environment, on Character Development, Scene Study, and Acting for Film. Movement A picture is worth a thousand words. We tell an audience so much more with our bodies than we do with what we say, therefore we must, as actors, learn how to express a character through the body. This class will focus on character development using movement methods such as the Laban technique. A wonderful accompaniment to our behaviour class. Private Coaching Do you have a big audition coming up? Have you prepared your monologue to audition for an agent? This is one on one work to prepare you for these things and more. We use our camera and screen so you can see your audition and make adjustments before going in there to get the gig.
The Business of Behaviour Take us to work. This course is designed for companies and their employees. Gain Confidence. Improve presentational skills. Gain confidence with public speaking. See yourself on film.
Other classes and workshops
As well as the aforementioned classes we offer many workshops and more advanced classes. We try and tailor our curriculum to the needs of our students and pride ourselves in giving actors the best training available.
