| by RALUCA STATE Montreal Mirror If you’re going to learn, learn from the best. That’s the philosophy behind Actor’s Studio Montreal Performing Arts (ASM), and it’s one that seems to be working - not just for the company’s three founders, but for all the local actors who have graced their stage as well. “The biggest aspects that I feel make us different are the environment that we set up and the people we are associated with,” explains Dean Fleming, one of the company’s co-founders. “Nobody but working actors, directors and writers teach at ASM.” ASM went into production in ’99 under the direction of local seasoned actors Fleming, Chip Chuipka and Lisa Kagan and is now a growing space complete with a stage, a library and a packed schedule of classes, covering much more than the basics of acting. ASM’s on-camera classes, not offered at most theatre schools, prepare students for their big moment on the big screen. “We record the students working in a head shot, then review it on a 27 inch television,” Chuipka explains. “Then we project the same scene on a nine-inch video screen… it’s fascinating to see a scene rock on the TV screen and then bomb on the cinema screen.” Extensive audition workshops focus on the ins and outs of the audition circuit; production classbreak down the lengthy process; and behaviour classes, ASM’s most popular offering, give actors a unique view of character study and human interaction. “I am a professional actor and have had professional training at a university level and I have taken this class four to five times,” Kagan says. “It’s a class where you never stop learning.” ASM also boasts a unique take on the industry and the craft. “Within our little microcosm no decision we make is ever solely based on money,” explains Chuipka. “We are united in the idea that our actors get what they pay for: our time and attention.” Which means a flexible schedule that will accommodate most classes regardless of the number of participants, and unlimited support for both fledgling and more experienced actors. After all, opines Kagan, “This is the most supportive city in Canada.” And ASM recommends practicing thespians use it. “Young actors should get out there and practice their craft,” Fleming urges. “They should be doing student films, independent films. Almost everyone has access to a video camera. Turn it on, tell a story.” : You can find ASM at 1216 Stanley, #300, or online at www.asmstudio.net. Info: 514-868-9111
